5 Steps to Preparing for a Renovation Project

After deciding on BMR Homes for your restoration and remodeling projects in Homewood, AL, what can you expect next?  Let’s say you and the BMR team have already finalized the remodel’s design and budget, so now it’s time to prepare for our arrival. For a smoother transition and less inconvenience on your part, there are a number of things you can do and complete before work begins.

Prepare the Renovation Space

Take steps to prepare the area(s) being renovated. Since dust and debris have no concept of “personal space”, it’s a good idea to remove everything you can from the area(s). Clear out all decor, housewares, and furnishings from the kitchen or bathroom that’s about to undergo a project. We also recommend removing anything directly outside the room so our crew can easily access the area.

Before the project begins, feel free to ask us any questions or approach us with any concerns about the living spaces that aren’t the ones being renovated. We can help you and your family get set up so that this project is as stress-free as possible.

Determine How to Give Us Entry

Our team will be in and out of your home pretty constantly, so we’ll need easy access, even when you’re not home (should that be part of the plan). We want you to be able to trust us throughout the whole process, so pick the entry method you’re most comfortable with whether that’s a garage code, spare key or secure keypad code.

Decide on a Filing System

When work starts, there will be receipts, project updates, punch lists and more.  Creating an electronic or paper filing system for all things “home improvement” will help you easily track and reference what you need. This will also be helpful if, heaven forbid, one of your new appliances malfunctions and needs repair. Plus, it’s always a good idea to have all of this information stored in a convenient location for the following tax season.

Secure Pets

Have a plan to keep your pet(s) secure, whether they’re dogs, cats, or birds. This is for their safety as well as ours! A renovation area is not a safe place for them, since there will be tools and possibly things a curious dog could ingest. Because of the dust and debris likely to be found in the construction area, they could also unintentionally track all of that through your home. You’ll also want to ensure your pet can’t go on a joy ride through the neighborhood when the remodel team is coming in and out of the house. We’re sure your furry family member will love your new kitchen or bathroom as much as you once we’re done!

Decide on Substitutions for Appliances & Amenities

Both our kitchen and our master bathroom play key roles in our daily lives, so how are you supposed to function without one of these for a few weeks? Surprisingly, it’s very possible and then next thing you know, you’ll be in your beautifully-renovated room!  Take a look at our previous blog for a more in-depth look at how to create a makeshift kitchen during a full kitchen remodel.

If you’re doing a bathroom remodel, consider using the kitchen sink and using a caddy for carrying all of your bathroom essentials in there. In the opposite scenario, consider using a bathroom sink or tub during a kitchen remodel.
