~IKF ALBERTVILLE: A BRIEF HISTORY~
CHITO-RYU: A BRIEF HISTORY
The true beginning of Karate probably grew out of a need for pre-historic man to defend himself against his enemies -human or animal. Because pre-historic man survived and evolved into what we are today, we know that their ability to defend themselves was successful in a time before the development of weapons. There are of course, no written records of this and no systematic indexing of the various survival techniques.
Before this century, there was no system for recording the art of self-defense. It is only in this century that the various techniques that we call Karate today have been recorded, examined, classified and improved. The man most responsible for the organization of Karate as we know it today was Gichin Funakoshi. He introduced Karate to Japan and made it popular. As it became increasingly popular in Japan, other Karate experts emerged. One of the better known experts was Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose,10th Degree Black Belt and founder of Chito-Ryu Karate.
Karate is a means of molding personality. It is an art that strengthens the physical, mental, and moral skills of an individual. The purpose of this art is not, and never has been, one of aggression. It is an art of self-defense. From ancient times, Karate men used their trained body as weapons only after being attacked. This ethical principle was stressed by Gichin Funakoshi in his instruction. It is the very "essence" of Karate.. Since Karate can be a terrible weapon if misused, it is most important that the student of Karate develop morally, as well as, physically.
There are five people, including Renchi Camp in our family tree. The originator was Gichin Funakoshi, the man credited with bringing karate as we know it to the world today. Next was our style's namesake, Dr. Chitosei. His student was Sensei Yamamoto. Fourth in line is Renchi Camp's instructor, Sensei Ray Nichols. Finally, there is your instructor, Renchi Camp. We teach our karate the same way it was originally taught, and will continue to do so that we may keep the art pure.

A True Karate Person
A true karate person is one with a God-like capacity to think and feel for others; irreespective of their rank or position. One who possesses ideals so lofty, a mind so delicate, that it lifts him above all things immoral and base, yet strengthens his hands to raise those who have fallen, no matter how low. The ultimate aim of karate, therefore, lies not in victory or defeat, but in the true perfection of one's character. --- Gichin Funakoshi.
