2011 3rd. Place, Universal Design
Allen Bath

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT:

The homeowners were desperate need of a handicapped accessible bathroom that would allow the homeowner more independence.  The existing bath was typical for a home built in the 1970’s with a 24” entry door, large vanity and a standard tub and toilet.  The door was enlarged to accommodate a wheelchair and the entire floor was tiled and made into a wet area.  A folding seat was added in the roll-in shower area so that the user would be more comfortable than in his wheelchair while showering.  Several grab bars were installed throughout the space to allow the homeowner more personal freedom.  A comfort height elongated toilet replaced the existing standard toilet.  A roll under vanity with a mirror that tilted replaced the large bulky wooden vanity.  Due to the size of the space, additional heating was installed to complete this renovation.

Purpose, Scope & Retail Price of the Project

These homeowners suddenly found themselves dealing with a traumatic injury and the everyday problems living this injury brings.  They were in needed of a wheelchair accessible bathroom that the homeowner could use without assistance.   With the master bedroom on the second floor, stair lifts were previously added to assist him up the stairs.  However, the need for a bathroom that would allow the homeowner to enjoy a shower and shave without assistance was vital.  The existing hall bath was fully gutted and transformed into a full service bathroom that would allow the homeowner a little independence.   The cost of this remodeling project cost $17,564.

Accomplishment of the Project

This remodel allowed the homeowner to care for his own personal needs and not be as dependant on his wife.  The small act of being able to take care of himself greatly added to his self esteem and gave him some dignity. His wife knew that with the right tools her husband would be able to provide for his own care.  They were unaware of all of the products available to people with special needs that would make their lives a little easier.  The new space is everything that the family wanted.

Significant Challenges and Creative Solutions

The greatest challenge was meeting the homeowners’ needs in the limited space that was available.  They were not aware of the many products that are available to people with special needs.  We spent a lot of time going over their specific needs and which products would meet these needs and be within their budget.  The resulting space more than made these homeowners happy.
